Arsenal FC news: Paul Merson can’t see Alexis Sanchez staying and is worried Gunners will struggle to finish in top four
Paul Merson has told talkSPORT his fears for Arsenal’s season and voiced his belief that Alexis Sanchez will leave before the close of the summer transfer window.
Despite the club finally splashing the cash on a new centre forward, the uncertainty surrounding the future of Sanchez – who hasn’t taken part in pre-season – has somewhat overshadowed the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette.
The Gunners will play in the Europa League this coming season after failing to finish in the top four for the first time in 21 years last term, and former midfielder Merson is concerned they could again struggle to compete with the Premier League’s elite.
“I just can’t see how [Alexis] Sanchez is going to stay; I don’t see anything but sixth for Arsenal, I really don’t,” Merson told the Weekend Sports Breakfast.
“I sit there and try and work out, try and make a case for them, and I can’t, I can’t make a case.
“I mean, you know [Alexandre] Lacazette better than me, you watch a lot more French football than me, and he is a good player.
“But, you know, if Sanchez goes… the team’s getting weakened straight away.
“I just worry for Arsenal, I really do. I think if they get in the top four next year, I think that’s a massive feat.”
