Super Bowl LIII

Here we are, only 1 day away from the pinnacle of the NFL season, the Super Bowl match that will take place on February 4th at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, where we will see New England Patriots playing against Los Angeles Rams.

SuperBowl

The upcoming Super Bowl match will see the two-time defending American Football Conference (AFC) champions New England Patriots playing against the National Football Conference (NFC) champions Los Angeles Rams to determine who will be named the National Football league or the NFL Champion. The match we will be watching will actually be a rematch of the first time these two sides met each other in Super Bowl XXXVI (2002), which was won by Patriots, despite the fact Los Angeles Rams were the heavily favourited team to win (17:20).

The XXXVI Super Bowl was also the New England’s first Super Bowl championship and franchise’s first league championship of any kind. As another interesting fact, I can mention that the XXXVI Super Bowl was the last time the Rams reached the Super Bowl during their time in St. Louis.

While I can go on and on about the history of the event, all the things that have happened in last season and much, much more, I will rather focus on the two teams who will appear in the Super Bowl LIII; New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams and why do I believe both teams have a chance to win the title.

Los Angeles Rams

Appearing in their 1st Super Bowl since 2001 when they lost to New England Patriots (17:20). In their franchise history, they have appeared in the Super Bowl 3 times up until now and only won once, back in 1999. Despite the fact they don’t have the best history in Super Bowl it’s hard to deny the Rams have a very strong offence. In fact, I could argue they will be the best offence New England has ever seen in the Super Bowl. That could be a problem for the Patriots, who lost the Super Bowl last season not because Philadelphia had a strong defence, but because Philadelphia outscored New England. In addition, the Rams are very good in shootouts. In games where a lot of points are scored, Rams usually come out on top, as they won 5 out of 6 games where teams scored 30 or more points. Not only that but the Rams have more sacks from interior lineman (25) than any team in the NFL and managed to hit the quarterback over 100 times! Now, why is that so important? Well, the only 2 other teams that managed to do that are Eagles and Giants and they are 2-0 against Patriots and Tom Brady. All in all, there are quite some reasons why Rams have a good chance to win against Patriots.

New England Patriots

Set as a -2.5 point favourite against the Rams, which is not surprising as they will appear in the Super Bowl for the 3rd consecutive year. In 2017, the Patriots bested Atlanta Falcons (34:28), but lost to Philadelphia Eagles in 2018 (41:33). Now they will look to win it once more this year, which could be their 6th title in 11 Super Bowl appearances. New England Patriots hold an impressive 6-0 record against the playoffs teams this season. While they can underperform against some of the teams, when they play against strong opponents, New England play very well. I mean just look what they did to the Chargers (41:28). And of course, we cannot forget to mention the biggest key in their success; Tom Brady, who has 300+ passing yards in 9 out of his 11 playoffs games. Do I need to say more?

While these two teams seem equally matched there are 2 issues for the Los Angeles Rams. Todd Gurley is in a terrible form, putting up a career low in touches and yards. Another big problem for the Rams is that they will enter the game without Cooper Kupp. While this might seem like a huge disadvantage for the Rams, I believe Rams are still a strong enough team to put up a good fight against the Patriots and maybe, just maybe go on and win. The experts are split between Rams and the Patriots. While some believe the poor form of Todd Gurley and the absence of Cooper Kupp will result in Patriots win, others believe Rams offence is just too strong for the Patriots and while Patriots have Tom Brady, he is expected to be hit more than several times. Let me remind you, Los Angeles Rams hit the quarterback over 100 times this season.

Whichever way we look at it, it will be an interesting match, and while I cannot call out a winner, I am positive we will be looking at a close match with plenty of points scored on both sides.
