Joe Hart is still one of the country’s best goalkeepers and will fight back from the criticism he is facing during his loan at West Ham, believes Chris Kirkland.

The Manchester City man has struggled for form ever since he was unceremoniously dropped by Pep Guardiola when the Spaniard was appointed manager in 2016.

Hart spent an unspectacular campaign in Italy with Torino last season and joined West Ham in the summer, where he immediately became the club’s first-choice keeper over long-term number one Adrian.

However, there have been calls for Adrian to return to the team after his recent impressive display against Man City, while Hart’s place as England’s No.1 has also been called into question in recent months, with Stoke’s Jack Butland,24, and Everton’s Jordan Pickford, 23, both impressing.

But former Liverpool and Wigan goalkeeper Kirkland says the 30-year-old is being unfairly treated.

“There seems to be a bit of a vendetta against him at the minute, for me he’s a top, top keeper,” Kirkland told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“The criticism Joe has taken has been very harsh, but we all know the industry we’re in – when you get a target on your back unfortunately it stays there for a while.

“But Joe is a big enough boy, he’s a great goalkeeper and he’s very confident – he’ll fight this all the way.”
